NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.8.1 Requirement:
Protect (i.e., physically control and securely store) system media containing Federal Contract Information, both paper and digital.
NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.8.1 Requirement Explanation:
By keeping “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI) in locked containers you prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining physical access to them. By creating an inventory of “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI) you can track your “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI).
Example NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.8.1 Implementation:
Create an inventory of digital media containing “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI). Whenever someone is provided with it record their name and time they took possession. This helps hold people accountable. Store paper and digital devices (e.g., CD drives, flash drives) containing federal contract information and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI) in locked drawers and containers. Label locked containers to indicate that they contain “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and or “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI).
NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.8.1 Scenario(s):
- Scenario 1:
You create an inventory of all digital media containing “Federal Contract Information” (FCI) and “Controlled Unclassified Information” (CUI). You then store the media in a locked cabinet. When someone requests access to the media you record their name and time they received it.
