NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.9.2 Requirement:
Ensure that organizational systems containing CUI are protected during and after personnel actions such as terminations and transfers.
NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.9.2 Requirement Explanation:
When an employee is terminated from your company they no longer have a legitimate need to access your systems. As a result, their system access must be revoked. Employees who change job roles may no longer need access to some resources. As a result, their access to system resources must be reviewed and updated to reflect their assigned duties.
Example NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.9.2 Implementation:
Document an employee termination process. This includes revoking their system access, taking possession of company-provided equipment, and debriefing them. Create a process for when employees transfer to a different team in your organization. This includes modifying their account and physical access authorizations to reflect their new job role.
NIST SP 800-171 & CMMC 2.0 3.9.2 Scenario(s):
- Scenario 1:
Human Resources has informed the IT team that an employee will be terminated at 3:00 PM. At 3:00 PM the IT team revokes the employee's access to company systems. The employee's manager collects the terminated employee's equipment and provides it to IT.
- Scenario 2:
Human Resources has informed the IT team that an employee is moving from the accounting department to another department. IT coordinates with the employee's new manager to determine which permissions the employee needs. IT revokes the permissions no longer required by the employee.
